Nikau trees

Nikau

Most palm trees grow in hot climates. Nikau trees like to grow in cold places in New Zealand especially in the south. It is New Zealand's native palm tree.

Early settlers eat this nice fat bulb portion of the Nikau. Captain Cook and his group also tried the fat bulb and they liked the rich taste of it. The Nikau trees can be extinct if people continue to cut down the trees.

Nikau trees are very useful for the Maori’s. They can be made into roofs, baskets and kete. Nikau leaves can also be made into clothes and hats. But now it is illegal to cut down the trees to get the leaves.
